Sweetheart of the Rodeo was the sixth album by The Byrds and was released on August 30, 1968. Recorded with Gram Parsons, Sweetheart of the Rodeo was the first major album to be called country rock. Although the album was not highly successful at the time of its release, today it is considered to be a highly influential part of country rock.

The Byrds were formed in 1964 as a trio with Roger McGuinn, David Crosby, and Gene Clark.  Chris Hillman and Michael Clarke joined the group in 1965. While the focus of the group was folk-rock music, they experimented with several different genres as the members of the group varied over time. Country rock pioneer Gram Parsons joined the group in 1967 and introduced them to that genre. In 1991 The Byrds were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. At this time McGuinn and Hillman are the only remaining members still active with the group.
