Covering the Limelight in ATX: January 2019

The second annual Hi, How Are You Day took place at Austin City Limits Live at the Moody Theater on January 22, 2019, and has highlighted by a benefit concert live-streamed world-wide. The concert included both local and world renowned artists and was headlined by The Flaming Lips.

The (HHAY) Hi, How Are You Project, founded by Tom Gimbel and Courtney Blanton, works to educate people about the importance of mental health and well-being. The project was inspired by Austin musician and visual artists Daniel Johnston's famous local mural of "Jeramiah the Innocent." The mural depicts a stylized frog asking "Hi, How Are You." The project encourages each of us to check on the well-being of others by contacting family and friends and asking four simple words, "Hi, How Are You?"

The Moth and The Flame

TMTF are an alternative rock band from Los Angeles. They released their debut album in November 2011. Band members include: Brandon Robbins - vocals, guitar; Mark Garbett - backing vocals, keys, synthesizer; Andrew Tolman - backing vocals, drums; and touring musician Michael Goldman - bass.

Tameca Jones

Austin native Tameca Jones is a soul/pop/R&B singer. She is known as the "Queen of Austin Soul." Ms Jones was awarded the 2018 Austin Music Award for Best Female Vocals.

Yo La Tengo

Yo La Tengo is an indie rock band from Hoboken, New Jersey. They were formed in 1984 by lead vocalist, guitarist, keyboardist Ira Kaplan and drummer, vocalist Georgia Hubley. Their newest member is bassist James McNew. YLT has released 15 albums including "There's A Riot Going On" in 2018.

Joining Yo LA Tengo for this performance was Jad Fair. the founder of the ground-breaking punk band Half Japanese.

Bob Schneider

Bob Schneider is an Austin-based singer, songwriter, and musician. He was formerly the lead singer for Ugly Americans. Bob also performed with The Scabs and Joe Rockhead before starting a solo career. As a fixture in the ATX music scene, Schneider has won numerous Austin Music Awards since 1992, including multiple Musician of the Year titles.

Built To Spill

Bulit To Spill is an indie rock band from Boise, Idaho. The band was formed in 1992 and has released 8 full-length albums. The band was founded by vocalist/guitarist Doug Martsch, who is the only permanent member. On this occasion Martsch pulled from his list of rotating musicians, bring on stage Boise musicians Melanie Radford on bass and Louis McFarland on drums.

Gavin DeGraw

Gavin DeGraw is a musician, singer, and songwriter. DeGraw rose to fame in 2003 when his single "I Don't Want To Be" from his debut album Chariot became the theme song for the TV series "One Tree Hill." Gavin DeGraw has now released 6 studio albums. In 2014, DeGraw was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Song Written for Visual Media for "We Both Know."

The Black Angels

The Black Angels are a psychedelic rock band from Austin. The were formed in 2004 and have released five albums including Death Song in 2017. The Black Angels members are Stephanie Bailey - drums and percussion; Christian Bland - guitar, drone machine/organ; Kyle Hunt - keyboards, percussion, bass, guitar; Alex Maas - vocals, bass; and Jake Garcia - guitar.

Bob Mould is best known as the guitarist, vocalist and songwriter for the alternative rock bands Husker Du in the 1980s and Sugar in the 1990s. He has also had a lengthy solo career having previously released 13 albums. His 14th, Sunshine Rock, is due out February 8.

The Flaming Lips

Headlining the evening was the experimental, psychedelic rock band The Flaming Lips lead by front man Wayne Coyne. The Flaming Lips were formed in Oklahoma in 1983 by Coyne and his brother Mark. Mark Coyne dropped out of the band early on, but the band, lead by Wayne, continued recording and rocking to their own beat ever since. The Flaming Lips have released 14 studio albums and several compilations and have earned 3 Grammy awards for their efforts.
