House Our Heroes
On November 13, 2016 a very special event took place at Stubb's Waller Creek Amphitheater when several of Austin's favorite musicians came together for a great cause: Red, White and Blues 512 presented House Our Heroes, a Blues Music Festival raising funds and awareness for Austin's homeless military veterans.
Under the leadership of Austin Mayor Steve Adler and ECHO (Ending Community Homelessness Organization), the Austin community is working together to help get our community's homeless veterans off the streets and into homes.
On the night, some of Austin's greatest Blues musicians turned up to help support this great cause.
Omar and The Howlers
Opening the evening was a long-time Austin favorite, Kent "Omar" Dykes and his electric blues band, Omar and The Howlers.
Jeff Plankenhorn
Singer, songwriter, bandleader, and multi-instrumentalist, Jeff Plankenhorn mixes blues, soul, rock, and roots to make his own special sound.
Joining Plankenhorn and his band for some selections was Cari Hutson. Hutson and her band soulfully combine blues, rock and country to make their sound.
Malford Milligan
Also performing with Plankenhorn was Malford Milligan. This world class blues and soul singer has been filling Austin clubs with his voice for a number of years since his first local band the Stick People started up. Then in 1994 he helped launch the Texas supergroup Storyville. Malford has worked and toured with many talented musicians over the years. Now he is fronting a new blues band, BIG CAT.
Tameca Jones
Also lending her talents to the evening was Tameca Jones. Ms Jones is a soul and R&B singer known as the "Queen of Austin Soul."
Jimmie Vaughan
Headlining the evening was blues guitarist Jimmie Vaughan. Vaughan is not just the older brother of legendary blues guitarist and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member Stevie Ray Vaughan. Jimmie is a phenomenal guitarist in his own right. He was a founding member of The Fabulous Thunderbirds. After taking some time off from music to cope with the tragic death of Stevie, Jimmie began a solo career in 1994. Today he can be found touring and performing with any number of music greats.
For this special night Jimmie was joined by highly regarded Hammond organist Mike Flanigin and legendary blues and R&B drummer George Rains.
