Escovedo Channels Cohen To Usher In The New Year At ACL Live
The Christmas and New Year holiday season has come and gone, and after a nice break visiting with family and friends, it's time for the Live Music Capital of the World to get back to it's normal rockin' self. That also means it's time for us at Limelight Imaging to get back to covering live music and other events all around Central Texas.
On Saturday, January 9, Austin's premier live music venue, ACL - Live at the Moody Theater presented its first event of 2016 when local favorite Alejandro Escovedo held his fourth annual Birthday party/concert, celebrating his January 10 birthday. This year's bash featured Escovedo and an all-star group of talented musicians performing works from one of the greatest storytellers in the last 100 years, a man who has greatly influenced Escovedo, award-winning Canadian poet, singer, songwriter, and novelist, Leonard Cohen.
Breaking from the normally covered pieces of Cohen's work, Alejandro Escovedo's A Thousand Kisses Deep: The Leonard Cohen Experience showcased some of Cohen's more obscure pieces interwoven with some of Alejandro's own musical selections and writings.
Joining Alejandro on stage were members of the jazz combo Church On Monday including saxophonist Elias Haslanger, drummer Scott Laningham, and bassist Daniel Durham. Also joining them were pianist Sean Giddings, cellists Matt Fish and Brian Standefer and vocalist Karla Manzur.
For this very special evening of music, Escovedo enlisted the help of two musicians who have worked with Leonard Cohen; guitarist Mitch Watkins and vocalist Julie Christensen. Rounding out this massively talented musical ensemble was a 9-member girls choir.
Actor Robert Patrick joined the cast, reading from Cohen's works while actor Rafael Childress read from Escovedo's 2002 musical play, By The Hand Of The Father.
It was truly a magical night at ACL - Live featuring superb artists, beautiful lighting and sound, and exquisite set design all working together to present a fascinating representation honoring a unique man and artist who has contributed so much to the world of music, Leonard Cohen.
