Austin City Limits Music Fest 2016 - Weekend 1

Tens of thousands of music lovers filled the Great Lawn of Zilker Park in Austin, Texas from Friday, September 30 through Sunday, October 2 to witness over 100 diverse musical acts perform their best and most popular pieces as weekend one of the Austin City Limits Music Fest kicked off its 15th year.

Festival goers had the opportunity to overindulge in everything from recently discovered synth pop acts like Prinze George to long established country performers who just so happen to call Austin home like Ray Benson.

Here's just a sampling of the incredible lineup and all of the fun goings on of the first weekend of ACL Fest 2016.



Friday, September 30 


The weather was absolutely perfect as the gates opened on the 15th annual Austin City Limits Music Festival. With temperatures reaching only into the low 80s, it felt like Fall finally arrived in Central Texas, just at the precise moment we needed it to.

Asleep At The Wheel

Kicking off the festivities was the one musical constant for Austin City Limits Music Festivals, having performed for all 15 years of Austin's biggest musical party, the 10-time Grammy winning "Kings of Western Swing," Mr Ray Benson and Asleep At The Wheel.

Along with Ray Benson, the members of Asleep At The Wheel include Dave Sanger on drums, Dave Miller on bass, Eddie Rivers on steel guitar, Connor Forsyth on piano, Jay Reynolds on sax and clarinet, Dennis Ludiker on fiddle and mandolin and Katie Shore on Fiddle.

Frightened Rabbit

Frightened Rabbit is a Scottish Indie Rock band. Their members include Scott Hutchison on vocals and guitar, Grant Hutchison on drums, Billy Kennedy on guitar and bass, Andy Monaghan on guitar and keys, and Simon Liddell on guitar.

Banks and Steelz

Banks and Steelz are a Hip-Hop/Alternative duo consisting of musician Paul Banks and Rapper RZA.
They were accompanied on stage by drummer Matt Barrick.

Prinze George

Prinze George is a Synth Pop group from Maryland. Members include vocalist Naomi Almquist, guitarist Kenny Grimm, and drummer Isabelle De Leon.

The Strumbellas

The Strumbellas are a Canadian Rock band whose sound is described as alternative country, indie rock and folk pop.  The members of The Strumbellas are vocalist, guitarist Simon Ward, vocalist, keyboardist David Ritter, lead guitarist Jon Hembrey, violinist Isabel Ritchie, bassist Darryl James, and drummer Jeremy Drury.

Blue October

Hailing from our great state of Texas, Blue October has long been a favorite with Austin audiences. The Alternative Rock band is lead by vocalist/guitarist Justin Furstenfeld along with founding members Jeremy Furstenfeld on drums and multi-instrumentalist Ryan Delahoussaye. The band also includes guitarist Matthew Ostrander and bassist Matt Noveskey.

Maren Morris

Maren Morris is best known for her recent Country hit, My Church, but she has been writing and recording for about 10 years. You can find her listed on writing credits for several of the original songs performed on the television show Nashville.

This English Indie Rock band hails from Oxford, England and has appeared around Austin on several occasions the past few years. The band is comprised of lead vocalist/guitarist Yannis Philippakis, bassist/vocalist Walter Gervers, drummer Jack Bevan, rhythm guitarist Jimmy Smith, and keyboardist Edwin Congreave.

M83 is a French Electronic Music band currently based in L.A. The group is led by Anthony Gonzales. Joining him on stage for ACL Fest 2016 was Kaela Sinclair on keys, Jordon Lawlor on bass, Joe Berry on keys and sax, and Loic Maurin on drums.

Radiohead

Closing out night one was British Rock band Radiohead. The Grammy Award-winning group released their ninth album in May 2016 and has been touring since then.

Radiohead, probably best known for its debut single Creep, is lead by vocalist Thom Yorke. Other members include lead guitarist Jonny Greenwood, guitarist Ed O'Brien, bassist Colin Greenwood, drummer Phil Selway, and percussionist Clive Deamer.

Saturday, October 1

Day two started with a few clouds and a slight chance of rain, but that didn't dampen the excitement of the crowd.


It's not an ACL Fest without the big balloon...

This five-piece English Alternative Rock band is from Southend-on Sea in Essex. The band members include vocalist Conor Mason, guitarist Joe Langridge-Brown, guitarist and keyboardist Dominic Craik, drummer James price and bassist Philip Blake.

Cavemen

Cavemen is a Rock band out of New York. Their members include vocalist Matthew Iwanusa, lead guitarist James Cabonetti, bassist Jeff Berrall, keyboardist Sam Hopkins, and multi-instrumentalist Matthew Prescott Clark.

Schoolboy Q

Schoolboy Q , Quincy Matthew Hanley, is a Hip-Hop recording artist from South Central Los Angeles.  His debut major-label studio album, Oxymoron, was released in February 2014 and hit number 1 on Billboards Top 200 chart.

The cloudy skies of earlier in the day eventually turned partly cloudy, giving the sell-out crowd of over 75,000 a beautiful Texas sunset to marvel over as they prepared to listen to the closing acts.

Two Door Cinema Club

Two Door Cinema Club is an Irish Indie Rock band. The band just released their third album, Gameshow, earlier this month, but has seen success with several tracks from previous albums being used in films, commercials, and video games.

Headlining the day of music was Rapper Kendrick Lamar. The seven-time Grammy winner was named by Time magazine as one of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2016.

Sunday, October 2

The sun was back out in full force for the third day of music and fans couldn't wait to get in the gates.

Wild Child is an Indie Pop band from right here in Austin, Texas. The band is comprised of vocalist, violinist Kelsey Wilson, vocalist, ukulele player Alexander Beggins, keyboardist Evan Magers, cellist Sadie Wolfe, bassist Chris D'Annunzio, drummer Drew Brunetti, and trumpeter Matt Bradshaw.

A rising star in the Country music scene, Kacey Musgraves hails from the tiny town of Golden, Texas. Kacey placed seventh in the 2007 edition of the USA network's singing competition Nashville Star. St Paul and The Broken Bones

St Paul and The Broken Bones are a soul band out of Birmingham, Alabama. Their second album, Sea of Noise, was released in September of this year.

Chris Stapleton

Country star Chris Stapleton and his wife Morgane Stapleton appeared together at this year's ACL Fest. Chris is a very successful songwriter, having written hits for the likes of Kenny Chesney, George Strait, and Darius Rucker, and many more songs for artists like Adele, Luke Byran, Tim McGraw and Brad Paisley.

Chris released his first solo album, Traveller, in May 2015, earning him a Grammy's for Best Country Album and best Country Solo Performance, along with awards in each of the Country Music awards platforms including CMT, CMA AMA, Americana, and Billboard.

Porter Robinson and Madeon

Electro-Pop artists Porter Robinson- a DJ, record producer, and musician from Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and Madeon- a DJ, record producer, songwriter and musician from Nantes, France, joined forces this year to collaborate on a track entitled "Shelter" and are now on tour together.

Young The Giant

Young The Giant took to the Miller Lite stage just as evening fell. Young The Giant's members are vocalist Sameer Gadhia, guitarist Jacob Tilley, guitarist/vocalist Eric Cannata, bassist Dayam Doostzadeh, and drummer/vocalist Francois Comtois.

LCD Soundsystem

Closing out the night on the Honda stage was the Rock band LCD Soundsystem. LCD is lead by vocalist James Murphy. keyboardist Nancy Whang, drummer Pat Mahoney, guitarist/percussionist Phil Mossman, and bassist Tyler Pope. Joining them in tour are Matt Thornley, Al Doyle, David Ascot Stone, Gavin Russom, Jerry Fuchs, J.D. Mark, Phil Skarich, Justin Chearno, and Korey Richey.
