Real Country Rocks Stubb's in ATX
Rising country star, singer-songwriter Sturgill Simpson stopped by the Stubb's BBQ Waller Creek Amphitheater in Austin, Texas on April 2, 2015 to perform for an enthusiastic sell-out crowd.
Sturgill is on tour in support of his 2014 sophomore album, "Metamodern Sounds in Country Music," which was nominated for a Grammy in the Americana Album of the Year category. Sturgill and his album also received honors for best album, best songwriter, and best male vocalist by the Nashville Scene's Country Music Critic's Poll.
With a sound reminiscent of country outlaw greats Waylon Jennings and Merle Haggard, the Kentucky-born Simpson thrilled the crowd with his own "real country" music as well as classic covers from lesser-known country greats.
Simpson was supported on stage by a talented group of musicians: Laur Joamet on electric and slide guitars, Kevin Black on bass guitar and Miles Miller on drums and percussion.
This wasn't Sturgill's only appearance in Austin during the first few days of April. On April 1st, Simpson shot his first taping for the PBS hit series, Austin City Limits, performing before a packed audience at the Moody Theater studio. Then, after a quick trip to North Texas, Simpson returned to the stage at Stubb's to entertain another sell-out crowd on April 5 .
Simpson joked to the audience that just two short years ago he was playing small clubs for 10 people and now he's selling out every stop. Simpson better get used to the larger crowds, because word about him and his great music is spreading across the land quickly. Keith Urban was even wearing a Sturgill Simpson t-shirt on last week's American Idol. Now, that simple little move by Urban just might be another major boost for Sturgill Simpson's career.
